Recently, the Zhejiang Provincial Museum showcased a groundbreaking approach to restoring ancient ceramics, allowing broken porcelain to be reborn through « blank space »—a technique netizens have praised as « aesthetics far ahead of its time. » At the heart of this innovation is the DF2+, a 3D printer capable of printing highly transparent materials.

This technology not only perfectly restores broken antiquities for exhibitions, but it also allows history buffs to bring a piece of « museum-grade » cultural heritage into their own homes.

The Challenge of Traditional Restoration & The Aesthetics of  Blank Space

Traditional restoration often relies on clay, plaster, or opaque resins to fill missing pieces, aiming for a « trace-less, faux-antique » finish. However, this approach can sometimes obscure the genuine marks of history. The museum’s restoration team proposed a different core philosophy: to « complete » rather than « cover up » the defect.

Inspired by the restoration concepts of the Western Xia Tombs, this philosophy of « complementing reality with imagination » avoids covering old marks with new materials. Instead, transparent materials preserve the restoration traces. Like the « blank space » in traditional Chinese painting, the transparent pieces allow viewers to instantly distinguish the historical original from the modern addition, giving dignity to the artifact’s brokenness— »half reality, half imagination. »

The Technical Workflow of Transparent 3D Printing

This avant-garde aesthetic is not born from thin air; it is built on high-precision digital scanning and scientific modeling. The entire workflow consists of five steps: 3D scanning, digital modeling, 3D printing replacement parts, fine post-processing, and bonding restoration.

1. High-Precision Digital Scanning: Making the Artifact Visible 

The restoration team utilized SCANTECH‘s NimbleTrack-CR equipment for non-contact 3D scanning. Whether it is microscopic textures invisible to the naked eye, porcelain fracture edges, or signs of wear over time, they can all be accurately and completely captured. This non-destructive data collection process provides the most authentic digital texture for subsequent completion.

2. Scientific Modeling: Allowing the Defect to be Seen

Restoration is not imagined out of thin air, but references the shapes and patterns of similar artifacts to digitally model and complete the missing sections. As restoration team leader Zhan Qingjing stated, every step is designed so that the defect is « seen, » rather than hidden.

3. Transparent 3D Printing: A Perfect Blend with Technology

Once the digital model is confirmed, the replacement parts are 3D printed using Raise3D’s High Clear Resin V1. In this step, the DF2+ Series 3D Printer plays a crucial role:

  • High Dimensional Accuracy: Typically, resin 3D printers are prone to shrinkage and deformation during the molding process, leading to deviations in dimensional accuracy. When creating small figure models or assembling resin-to-resin parts, such deviations are often unnoticeable. However, when producing mating parts across different materials—such as fitting a resin part to a porcelain artifact—dimensional accuracy becomes critical. The DLP printing technology utilized by the DF2+ significantly minimizes part distortion compared to LCD technology. This ensures that the printed transparent fragments fit the ancient ceramic edges perfectly, achieving seamless integration.
  • Exceptional Optical Clarity and Post-processability: Ordinary transparent resins tend to yellow over time and are prone to cracking or deforming when exposed to solvents. In contrast, Raise3D’s high-transparency resin is highly resistant to yellowing, and its surface can be easily post-processed with clear coats. This allows the 3D-printed restoration parts, once integrated with the artifact, to highlight the broken beauty of the historical original through a crystal-like, transparent texture.
